2. English Language Proficiency Exams

MSU accepts the TOEFL, MELAB, and MSUELT. Consult the MSU Admissions web site for details.

The TOEFL is offered in computer-based format only (year round, world wide---The MSU Testing Office is an official test site). See National Exams Tests page.

The MELAB is based in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan. The MSU Testing Office is an official test site for the MELAB. Link to MELAB (above) for details.

How to register for the MELAB at MSU:

  • Print a copy of the MSU MELAB Reservation Form and follow the directions on the form. The test is usually offered at noon on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. The deadline for registration and receipt of payment is the 1st Wednesday of that month. Call the Testing Office at 517-355-8385 for more information.
  • Obtain a registration bulletin from the Testing Office (in person) or from the MELAB web site and review the day-of-test rules and regulations. The test fee must be paid in two parts: 1) non-refundable proctoring fee of $60 paid at the time of registration   2) testing fee of $60 paid when you arrive for testing.
  • Both fees may be paid by cash or check made payable to Michigan State University.

OTHER ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EXAMS.....

  • The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is available in the Detroit area. Consult the TOEIC web site or call 607-748-9500.
  • The SPEAK test is similar to the old Test of Spoken English. For more information on the SPEAK test at MSU, call the English Language Center at 517-353-0800.
  • The Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) "is a multi-skill advanced-level test battery that provides successful examinees with an official certificate that can be used as evidence of English language proficiency for education and employment purposes."
  • The Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) "is a multi-skill intermediate-level test battery that provides successful examinees with an official certificate that can be used as evidence of English language proficiency."
